The research focuses in Dr. Lee’s lab aim to identify cellular/molecular properties of neural stem cell niches in brain, investigate the regulatory mechanisms/communications between neural stem cells and their niches, elucidate their roles in neural regeneration and the impacts of their dysfunction in neurodegeneration, and to develop means manifesting brain regeneration for the therapy of brain degeneration. Dr. Lee’s lab showed that a neuronal transmembrane serine protease (MTP) is critical for maintenance of brain neural stem/progenitor cell, neuronal differentiation, neural stem/progenitor cell migration, neural stem/progenitor cell bioenergetics, ischemic stress defense, and most importantly, the communication with vascular niche in brain neurogenic regions through physical interaction with a brain endothelial adhesion molecule (MCAM). Dr. Lee’s lab demonstrated that the type II diabetes medicine gliptins have therapeutic benefits against brain degeneration. The various gliptins may preferentially function on anti-inflammation or protection against neurogenic aberrance.
