Our research focuses on neurovascular interaction, epidermal barrier formation, and hair follicle cycling. We established primary cell culture system, gene expression profiling analysis, and genetically modified mouse system to carry out the mechanistic study. We have been working on the molecular mechanism controlling the identity of hair follicle stem cells and progenitors, hair growth initiation, and hair cycle maintenance. These works are continuation of our long-term interests in Notch and TGF-β signaling pathways, as well as the relationship between cell death and stem cell differentiation. We also did tissue engineering of human skin and developed a 3D organotypic skin unit system using a 3D bioplotter, which is beneficial for alternative in vitro skin tests.
The vertebrate central nervous system consists of neurons, glia, and blood vessels, which are tangled to form neurovascular units. While a continuous blood flow is required to nurture the neuron and glia, the brain environment also needs to be separated from the circulating blood to maintain the proper neuronal function. Increased vascular permeability or compromised blood-brain barrier resulted from stroke or neurologic disease allows the blood constitutes entrying into the brain, leading to reactive inflammation and neuronal damage. We are interested in how the vascular-derived cues leads to neurodegeneration in vascular dementia and the pathogenesis of cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), in line with ICSM/institute mission-oriented goals.
